Before Connecting

A step-by-step guide to accessing the UConn network

One of the most common questions we receive from new students and their families is "What do I need in order to get on the UConn network?" The answer is simple: all you need is a computer and a network cable! Although we are in the process of implementing wireless access across campus, many of our dorm rooms are wired-only. The first time you connect from your room, you should plug your computer directly into the wall – please do not use a router. After you've plugged in, follow the steps linked below, depending on your operating system.

Select your Operating System

Vista Windows Vista

Microsoft's newest version of Windows, released at the end of 2006. Has a more attractive interface and more sophisticated security features than XP, but requires a more powerful computer to run adequately. Ships on most new computers.

XP Windows XP

The oldest and most widely used operating system on the market. Windows is the target of most viruses, due to its prevalence, but also has a wealth of software available, and does not require a powerful computer to run well. Still ships on some miniature notebooks.

Mac Mac OSX

Ships on all Apple computers, includes a wealth of audiovisual editing software, and is less prone to viruses than Windows. The newest version, 10.5, is dubbed "Leopard." Apple computers typically cost a premium, and can be serviced by Apple technicians only.

Linux Linux

An open-source, free alternative to Windows and Mac OSX that is collaboratively developed by programmers worldwide. Is maintained by several different "distributions," the most popular of which is called Ubuntu.

Update Your Operating System

It is important for you to have an up-to-date operating system in order to protect your computer against security vulnerabilities. If your system is fully updated, your computer will be fully functional with all of UConn's wireless features and online software. Check our knowledgebase page on OS Updates for more information.
